Gambling has been around for quite some time now. Even though the origins aren’t clear, throughout ancient civilizations one can find proof that gambling and wagering was practiced long before the 20th century. While betting on card games and other games of chance has been quite popular, so has betting on specific sports outcomes.
Sports betting is not only a fun and harmless way to make a sporting event a bit more exciting, but it also allows the bettor to make a buck or two. In this post we take a closer look at the roots of sports betting, and what the future may hold. Let’s dig in!
The Early Days
The Greeks were the first to introduce athletics and sports to the world. It is during this time that the Olympics came into being, as well as the practice to bet on the outcome of these sporting events. The Romans soon followed suit, but weren’t as accepting. Betting was considered illegal yet eventually it was legalized. Much later on the Brits joined in the fun and started betting on horse races.
Sports Betting in the 20th Century
Next, we jump forward to Las Vegas in the 1950s. Even though sports betting was not legalized in the United States, Las Vegas was the only state where bettors could wager on the outcome of a sporting event. The catch was you had to visit a land-based casino to place your bet. Eventually sports bookies started allowing bettors to place their bets with them.
Nowadays, you don’t have to be at a match or a brick-and-mortar casino to place your bet with a sportsbook. Thanks to the internet and the introduction of online casinos in the late 20th century we are now able to bet on just about any sport we watch from just about anywhere in the world. All you need is a stable internet connection, a failsafe strategy and you are good to go.
Back to the Future
But what do we expect the future of sports betting to look like? Will there be AI involved? Currently, there are still very strict laws that govern sports betting practices in the United States. While some states permit sports betting, others don’t. But, it’s all for fun, and if you enjoy betting, you can look forward to betting on fantasy sports or Daily Fantasy Sports.
It is clear that betting has always been a favorite pastime amongst people. Not only does it liven up your experience of any given match or game, you get to try your best to guess a specific outcome and make some money. We bet the future of sports betting is pretty bright by the looks of things.
